Direct download for Ovi Maps 3.0 without using Map Loader

Ovi Maps is the new name of Nokia Maps, and the old Nokia Map Loader is replaced by Nokia Maps Updater. With Ovi Maps on your Nokia Smartphone, you can take free mobile maps, no extra money, explore places you need nearby, and let Maps show you the way. On foot or in the car, Maps can direct you to your destination turn-by-turn, starting from right where you are.

This application is final version, many of the bugs that made the older beta test versions unusable have been fixed. There are still plenty of bugs left, but on most Nokia phone these won't be worse than the bugs that remain in the old Nokia Maps 2.0. Some features on Ovi Maps 3.0: weather, events, and movie info, faster zooming and panning, newer maps, and traffic info for North America. And the maps for India in Ovi Maps 3.0 are better than those of the old Nokia Maps.

Make sure to choose the right type of map. To check your version of Ovi Maps or Nokia Maps select "options" and choose "about" in Nokia Maps or Ovi Maps on your phone. Find your version of Nokia Maps. If this is not the right version for you choose another version here. Someone on the Nokia forum managed to fix a "map layers out of sync" problem by allowing the maps application to go online once. Should you face the same problem, this solution may work for you too.

Instruction:
  • Download Ovi Maps without Nokia Maps Updater [symbian underground]
Ovi Maps 3.0 for S60 3rd ed. Feature Pack 1 (N82, N95, etc., check this list of FP1 phones)
Ovi Maps 3.0 for S60 3rd ed. Feature Pack 2 (N78, N79, etc., check this list of FP2 phones)
    Ovi Maps 3.0 for S60 5th ed. (Nokia 5800XM, N97)
    Nokia.Ovi.Maps.v3.01.2602.S60v3.SymbianOS9.1.Unsigned(h@ck ver)
  • Run Ovi Maps on your phone once before you add any maps or voices. This will create the required folder structure on your memory card.
  • Unzip the downloaded map files and drop them into the appropriate folders on your memory card.
  • On my Nokia the folder structure is cities with a subfolder called diskcache, filled with 16 subfolders called 0 to 9 and a to f, and each of these folders have another 16 subfolders 0 to 9 and a to f.
  • Map files have the extension .cdt. Example:
    [memory card]\cities\diskcache\[0-9, a-f]\[0-9, a-f]\filename.cdt
  • On some Nokia phones (like the N95) maps are stored in:
    \Private\20001f63\diskcache\[0-9, a-f]\[0-9, a-f]\filename.cdt
  • To install, just drop the 16 folders called 0-9 and a-f into the diskcache folder.
  • If your phone has both folders, get a small map (for a single country) and try both folders to see which one works. Even Nokia's own map loader doesn't always get it right. Details on the Nokia discussion board.
  • You may need to tell your computer to show hidden files and folders

How to add Voices for all versions of Nokia Maps
  • Run Nokia Maps on your phone once before you add any maps or voices. This will create the required folder structure on your memory card.
  • If you unzip the voices, you'll get a folder with a name of the language. This folder contains an .xml file and a subfolder full of files without any extension. This folder should go into the cities folder.
  • For example, if you download english.zip, the unzipped folder (called english) goes into the cities folder on your memory card so you'll get:
    [memory card]\cities\english\etc.
  • On some Nokia phones (like the N95) voices are stored in:
    [memory card]\Private\20001f63\english\etc.
  • If your phone has both folders, try both folders to see which one works. Even Nokia's own map loader doesn't always get it right. Details on the Nokia discussion board.
  • You may need to setting your computer to show hidden files and folders.

Network monitoring your Internet quota with Data Monitor

Surfing the internet although the phone that has a screen size is quite small when compared to PC monitors, but still very fun, until we can forget time, forget to eat, and once again forgot the cost of Internet connection itself. We should be more clever to manage, network monitoring and control the data packet that is used so that the excess cost to access the internet itself could we reduce.

Data monitor, is an application designed to be able to monitors network traffic through specific network connections on the device it is installed on, and displays real-time data usage information. You can customize the way the ticker window is displayed, its position and the background and foreground colors. The user can also select the network to be monitored and the limit for alert.

Concept Nokia Dual Core Symbian Phones

Engadget reports that Nokia will be shipping Dual Core Symbian Devices next year with a revamped UI.

Well, Symbian has always been open about its roadmap. Back in February this year they mentioned this in exact detail (when they were still Symbian Foundation and Symbian^N was still the norm). Now Nokia has taken Symbian development back and Symbian will no longer have ^N nomenclature, just Symbian as we have confirmations that Symbian^3 devices will be getting the much awaited new enhancements meant for Symbian^4.

Today however in a presentation in Beijing, Gunther Kottzieper from Nokia gave some slides incidating Nokia Symbian 2011 focus areas including

  • Q1 Symbian update will include over 50 features << new browser, new keyboard, draggable homescreen and more. Preview video of which was taken down by Nokia due to “copyright infringement”. boo.
  • New look and feel UI in 2nd and 3rd quarter. Aka July and October 2011.
  • updateable HTML5 browser (<< this better be as good as MicroB, dammit!)
  • Easier software update experience
  • 1GHz devices with more graphics memory in 2nd/3rd quarter
  • Dual core phones
  • True Zoom camera (is this a fancy term for their awesome digital zoom or optical zoom?)

What I’m sure we’d all love from 2011 Nokia announcement side is NO BLOODY LATE DELIVERY. Announce, deliver. Delay should never be something associated with Nokia product line ups for 2011!

Source: Engadget

Cheers Adnan. BTW, Nokia E7 is also apparently delayed for “early” 2011. So it seems Three wasn’t just delivering E7 late then and that there will be no other channels bringing it early.

Damn you Nokia. In what world does December 2010 mean Early 2011?

“To ensure best possible user experience on the Nokia E7, we have decided to begin shipping it in early 2011″

What a piss poor delay. I’m sorry, but N8 has been delayed for so long. Symbian^3 experience should be identical for E7 bar the keyboard. Are they trying to tie in the new firmware release for N8 with the E7? Bah. That’s still annoying. Which is why I repeat my rant statement that in 2011 there should be no damn delays from Nokia! Come on Mr Elop, whip their asses into shape! Take a leaf out of Apple’s book and release devices soon after announcement – if not, twist words around so instead of

“Nokia E7 delayed”

we have

“Nokia E7 has brand new release date!”.

Whilst we’re here, please don’t feck up MeeGo. I think 2011 is the last and final straw otherwise I’ll be getting an iPhone in 2012 :p Ha the world will have to end first.

Practical ways to enable Video-Call Skype on Nokia N8

Skype has published a free application for Symbian phones, which can be accessed by more than 200 million users of Nokia handsets. Skype.com website is provided for handset users to download for free through their mobile phone, which will be used users on Nokia smartphone Symbian^1, until the final version of the OS Symbian^3.

Appearance skype software for Nokia Smartphones symbian^3, of course, is expected to increase the existence of this application, and if the Skype app for the iPhone be a success indication, the addition of Skype will increase the number of visitors significantly.

This application has everything you want such as free telephone support to other Skype users via Wi-Fi and 3G, instant messages, images, video distribution, also contains a number of interface improvements, making it easier to add contacts, navigate, add a photo to your profile and set your mood message.

Here are 5 easy steps to activate it:
* Enable Skype account on the N8. Go to Settings> VoIP and IM Accounts. Select 'New' and 'Skype'.
* The Skype account is ready, select Availability mode 'online'.
* Go to the contact, and select one of your friends that her Skype account active. Make sure the friends of Skype users, also activate the latest version of Skype.
* Choose a Skype video-call.
* If you interact with users of video calls through N8, he would be able to see you. You also can turn off the camera that appears to hide your face.

Swype Officially Comes To The N8

The first Symbian^3 version of Swype hit the Ovi Store with support for the Nokia C7 a while back, but a similar version with support for the N8 has only hit the store today. Previously if you wanted to get Swype on your N8, you had to go about it in a roundabout manner, however now you can simply search for it and install.

Swype Officially Comes To The Nokia N8 Via The Ovi Store

If you already have the C7 version installed, I’d suggest uninstalling that and downloading the N8 version afresh. The file is a 3.3 MB download, but curiously it is only 7MB when installed compared to the 10MB install of the C7 version with no visible difference in settings. By default Ovi Store preferences has installs set to the 16GB inbuilt memory, but I suggest you make an exception and install Swype to the phone memory.

The current version supports English, Spanish, FrenchCA and PortugueseBr with more language support expected soon. Incase you are wondering, there is no portrait mode, that’s only coming in 2011. (Camb078.)

Protect Mobile Data with Lockdown

Protect Mobile Data with LockdownIn Singapore, in every 2 hours, a mobile phone stolen. Years ago, in Korea lost 4.5 million mobile phones for various reasons. Similarly the airport in Los Angeles recorded 400 phone lost in a month.
Not clear how many cases going missing in Indonesia. But that, we should be more careful because the mobile phone contains a variety of important data (Email App, Messages, Contacts, Call history, browser history, etc.), Which can be harmful to us if stolen.
To anticipate this, you can try the application "lockdown". This application is able to protect all data stored on mobile phones.

Before-Installing:
You Must have the following:
- Jailbroken ipod touch/iphone in firmware 2.1
- Must Uninstall any older form of Lockdown
- Must have Mobile Substrate installed through Cydia
- SSH access to your jailbroken device
- Terminal or Putty so you can input commands

How to Install:
1. Download Lockdown, In the download folder there are 2 things when you unzip it. There is the Lockdown.app and Lockdown.dylib.

2. First navigate to /Applications on your device

3. Then place Lockdown.app in there

4. Next go to /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLybraries and put Lockdown.dylib in there.

5. Now open up terminal or putty and input each of these commands one at a time.
Code:
chmod 755 /Applications/Lockdown.app/Lockdown6.
chmod 755 /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/Lockdown.dylib7.
rm /var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist8.

6. After you reboot your device it may take UP TO 5 minutes to turn back on!! So please do not get worried if it takes longer than usual.

Another way to install LockDown:

To install LockDown, you need to jailbreak your iPhone first. Once you have jailbroken your iPhone. You’ll got a Cydia icon on your SpringBoard.

1. Launch the Cydia.

2. Go to Search Tab and search for Lock Down and tap it.

3. Tap Install button at Top-Right and then Confirm button at Top-Right to begin installation.

4. After completion, go back to Springboard where you’ll find a brand new icon i.e. LockDown.

How to use LockDown

  • When you will run the Lockdown application for the first time, you will be asked to setup a Safety Code and a Password. This password will be used to unlock any locked application and to open Lockdown itself. Safety code is useful in case you forget your LockDown password.
  • Once you have setup the Password and safety code, you will see all your iPhone applications listed on next screen.
  • Select any application you want to lock, a Lock button will appear. By tapping that button your selected application will be locked and a little lock icon will appear next to that locked application.
  • Now if you close LockDown App and try to open you locked application (Mail app in this example), you will be prompted to enter the password to open it. Full YouTube On Your S60 v3 Device!

Yes, you read it correctly! You can now have access to any and I mean any video on youtube or any other flash video based website. There is no longer a need for converters or portals like m.vtap.com or the youtube mobile site. Forget them all!
In this guide I will list out a few easy steps which will allow you to do so.

REQUIRMENTS:
1. Flash Lite 3 (Freeware)
2. Opera 8.65
* Opera S60v3 v.8.65 AMERICAS ver
* Opera S60v3 v.8.65 APAC ver
* Opera S60v3 v.8.65 AMEA ver
3. CNPDA Flash Player (mirror)

Once the above is done with, lets start:
1. Goto Youtube.com from the browser. Exit the mobile version, move onto the classic variant.
2. Search for a video as you normally would, open it.
3. It will fail to playback, nevermind we just need the URL. Save the bookmark and copy from URL from the saved bookmark.
4. Open Opera browser(not mini) and head over to http://www.keepvid.com/. (Or any other site that allows you to extract the Flash video.)

5. Paste the link and make sure to choose Youtube. (In case the video is from any other site choose that particular site’s name).

6. Press “Download” and after a few seconds you will have a pop up with the download link to the video. The download button is the small box underneath the words “Anysite” in the screenshot above.

7. Once the download is complete, copy the video to E:Others\video.
8. Rename the video to “1.flv”. (or 2.flv or 3.flv)
9. Install Flash light 3 if you already have not.
Setting Up the FLV player:

- Download FLVplayer and copy it to the “Other” folder and create a folder there named “video”. (E:\Others\video)
- Rename your flv files 1.flv, 2.flv, 3.flv and place them in the “video” folder.
10. You can have upto 3 flv files ready for playback. For more simply keep renaming them.
11. Run Flash Lite 3 and select the FLVplayer, choose options and select Full Screen mode.
12. Just press 1 and the video will start playing! Press 4 or 6 for great full screen viewing! If you have more that one video saved press 2 or 3 for the corresponding video to begin playback.

Tips:
- Increase the Display time out to maximum while you are watching videos.
- While the player is running press options for volume and other controls.
